On the occasion of World Elephant Day, a unique celebration at India’s only Elephant Village in Amer, Jaipur, brought together wildlife, culture, diplomacy and international friendship.
Elephants hold a special place in India’s cultural and civilisational heritage. Recognised as India’s National Heritage Animal, they have long been associated with Indian traditions, art, festivals, royal history and religious symbolism. India is also home to nearly 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephant population, highlighting their importance to the country’s biodiversity and living heritage.
A key highlight was a distinctive elephant fashion show, where traditionally adorned elephants showcased Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage and longstanding association with these majestic animals. The celebration also marked the birthday of “Jonali,” an elephant at the village, who delighted guests by participating in her own birthday cake-cutting ceremony.
The event was attended by H.E. Ms. Hanisha Jayaram, Ambassador of Suriname; Ms. Saachi Soekhoe, Deputy Ambassador of Suriname; Mr. Marat Mailakian, Deputy Ambassador of Armenia; Mr. Abdirisak Seid Noor, Diplomat from Somalia, members of Ethiopian and Somali expatriate communities, and representatives of the Rajasthan Government.

Organised under the guidance of Mr. Shafiq Khan “Ballu,” President, Elephant Village Development Committee, and coordinated by Mr. Prashant Sharma, Editor – Special Affairs, News India 24×7, the programme highlighted elephant conservation, cultural heritage and international people-to-people connections.
For GTTCI, the celebration reflected how culture, wildlife conservation and international engagement can create meaningful connections across communities and nations.
